Underwater Concreting of Sukkur Barrage:
A scour problem affected and endangered the very existence of Pakistan’s famous Sukkur Barrage. The Civil Works Team immediately swung into action undertaking the following immediate actions:
All necessary equipment and material including underwater plasticizer chemical from the UK were procured.
Professional divers quickly surveyed the damage, a difficult task especially with muddy water, making visibility zero.
Holes were drilled into the ditches for pouring in concrete.
A huge concrete mix was used to stabilize the concrete base structure providing full support to the gates of the Barrage, entirely to the satisfaction of the Irrigration Department Govt of Sindh.
Survey
Beside hydrographic survey, The Civil Works Division is also actively engaged in 3D data acquisition using GPR and ERT investigation techniques.
With the GPR investigation in general the following results can be obtained:
- Bedding / thickness of different layers with high accuracy
- Detection of hidden buried man made objects (cables, tubes, top of sheet piles, etc)
- Localization of weak areas
- Detection of voids, tunnels, cracks
- Localization of single objects
- Continuous cross-section (2d information of the subsurface)
